Detailed Process Description for Palm Fruit Pressing
The extraction of palm oil from palm pulp is a well-established process, capitalizing on the pulp's high moisture and lipase content. This mature pressing technology begins with sterilizing fresh fruit bunches (FFB) after weighing. FFBs are transported via conveyor to a vertical sterilizer, where they undergo multiple heating and sterilizing cycles to prevent lipase hydrolysis. Post-sterilization, FFBs are fed into a thresher to separate fruit from bunches. Empty bunches are then repurposed as fertilizer. The processed palm fruit proceeds to a digester and then to a specialized screw press for crude palm oil (CPO) extraction. This oil, containing water and impurities, is refined through sand trap tanks and vibrating screens before moving to a clarification station. Wet fiber cake produced during pressing is directed to the boiler house for combustion.
The wet fiber cake consists of wet fiber and nuts, with the fiber holding 6-7% oil content. Initially, the cake breaker conveyor cracks the mixture, separating most fibers through a pneumatic fiber depericarper system. The nuts, along with minor fibers and impurities, proceed to the polishing drum for further separation. Pneumatic nut transportation carries nuts to the ripple mill for cracking, after which the mixture of shell and kernel undergoes further separation via a clay bath system. This process yields pure kernel (shell content <6%), which is dried to 7% moisture in a kernel silo before storage. Once enough dried kernels are collected, they are sent to the palm kernel oil mill. Separated shells are temporarily stored for use as boiler fuel.
Post-screening and sand trap tank filtration, palm oil is directed to the crude oil tank for heating. It is then continuously pumped into a clarification tank for separation. Purified oil moves to a pure oil tank, while sludge oil is sent to a sludge tank for centrifugation. This process recycles the separated oil back to the clarification tank. Pure oil is subsequently purified, vacuum-dried, and collected in a collection tank, ready for use.
